Review
I know, I know. You might be thinking “Dude, this Spider-Verse thing is played OUT. That movie came out two years ago!”, but guess what? Good comics are good comics and you shouldn’t put a limit on them. Spider-Ham was a favorite of mine when I was a kid, so I’m inclined to pick up any title that he’s in, but in this case, I can put aside my bias and be completely objective. This book rocks. Hard. It’s the perfect pallet cleanser for all the serious, downbeat, sober comics that populate the comic stands today. In a world of Batmen that laugh, this book jumps off the stands at you and makes you laugh. Zeb Wells is back, and he’s brought his fantastic sense of humor with him. Spider-Ham (who can also break the fourth wall, Deadpool!) journeys to the main Marvel U Earth to get some help for a problem that’s got every hero on his Earth baffled, not to mention they’re busy battling The Swinester Six!! Wells set out to make the audience laugh, and he doesn’t stop until he does.
Repeatedly.
There’s a very solid overall story, even an interesting mystery, but damn, this is actually a FUNNY funny animal book. It’s a parody in the spirit of Mad Magazine, spiced with some slapstick humor. It’s great to see how Marvel U mainstays interact with super-hero animal versions of themselves.
The art by Will Robson is really strong this issue. He not only pulls off the funny animal side, but he also turns his style on its ear and does a great job with the human side of the book, and then he combines the two with a result that hasn’t been achieved since someone put chocolate in my peanut butter: Out of this world!! He also pulls a third style out of his hat, I can’t go into what is because that would spoil the surprise ending of this book and this isn’t comic book resources, so you’ll have to grab the book to see what it is, but trust me it’s awesome!!
Final Thoughts
A really fun comic. It'll make you smile, and that's not a bad thing. Any form of entertainment that puts someone in a better mood, is an automatic win!
