Review

Pine & Merrimac #2 is a strong entry in this thriller series from BOOM! Studios. It’s fast-paced and not only is the story intriguing, but the ensemble of characters make for a refreshing world to explore.

Linnea and Parker Kent run a small private investigator company in the small town of Jamesport. While they have good intentions of using their skills for good, it’s clear some townsfolk aren’t too keen on their work. This issue kicks off with Linnea waiting for a coffee when a woman (who was caught having an affair) harasses Linnea and—likely—messes with Linnea’s coffee order. It’s a small moment, but it’s a great use of world building that makes for a great read.

Writer Kyle Starks, who is fresh off of Peace Maker Tries Hard!, flexes his writing skills by combining his comedic style with a somber and intense story centered around a missing girl and possibly a larger conspiracy.

The writing is well-done as not only is the story captivating, but the characters of Linnea and Parker are so likable that it’s easy to want to follow and cheer them on in their quest. While this is only the second issue, a lot has been presented in a very accessible way.

In addition to the writing, the art from Fran Galán has incredible range. From charming moments between Linnea and Parker, to action set pieces while the two run from gun fire, the character design and style fits the comic book medium well while also adding to this mystery story.

Final Thoughts

For those who haven’t checked out this series, now is a good time to check it out and dive head first into a mystery that has been incredibly interesting. Not only has Starks created two memorable characters, but the hints of a larger conspiracy have made this a must read series.
