Power Rangers Unlimited #3: Ocean’s 5

Broodwing is throwing an auction, and the Power Rangers are looking to leave with the big lot, Serpentera! However, this mission will require a little bit more finesse. It’s time for a good old fashioned heist!

Power Rangers Unlimited continues to be a fun ride through the franchise mythos, but this issue leaves you a bit wanting when it comes to our lead. Before we get to that though, the mission comes first and what we get is pretty fun all things considered. Striking Tiger is back in the field and this time she’s bringing along: Connor McKnight (Dino Thunder Red Ranger), Elizabeth “Z” Delgado (SPD Yellow Ranger), Will Aston (Operation Overdrive Black Ranger), and Sarah Thompson (Ninja Steel Pink Ranger), and a man on the inside (but eye won’t reveal that twist).

Porter and Esposito continue to show their knowledge of this franchise, and this team is proof of that as they have a bit more cohesion than last issues (which was just Andros, Karone, and some others). Sarah’s position as “The Brain” could have been filled by a number of other rangers, but Ninja Steel is one of the more maligned seasons so its inclusion here is welcome. Will’s background as a thief made him a no-brainer as well as Z’s expertise as a SPD officer giving her familiarity with Broodwing. Connor’s super speed (while not properly depicted) also proved crucial to the mission. The interplay within the team is fun and they fit well, but the problem is Trini. Three issues in and we still haven’t been informed much more on her character other than she had a daughter that died and she’s sad about it. There is a moment at the end of the issue where she watches an alternate version of herself play with an alternate version of her daughter, but it doesn’t really tell us anything we don’t already know. There’s also the fact that we still don’t know the identity of the series antagonist.

Alessio Zonno’s art remains a good pair with Raul angulo’s lush colors, but like I stated earlier the one issue is how it depicts Connor’s superspeed. To go on a slight tangent, the art presents Connors speed with lightning similar to a DC speedster, however in the Dino Thunder show it was always shown to have more of a blur effect like Marvel’s Quiksilver. Again this is more of a nitpick than a serious knock. Speaking of civilian powers, Z’s copies get a major upgrade here and lead to a few fun action scenes.
