Recap

As if the medium-spanning, fan-favorite villain Drakkon wasn't enough of a threat, Mistress Vile has special plans, ones that will bring the Rangers' greatest foe into our world!
But this scheming isn't without consequences for Drakkon, and he'll have to take a page from the book of Zordon if he wants the world of The Coinless to survive.
But who would be unhinged enough to join his team? As if they have a choice...
In anticipation of the monumental 30th anniversary of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise, acclaimed Dead Mall and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance writer Adam Cesare teams up with Mighty Morphin artist Moisés Hidalgo to present the last Rangers anyone would want to be... that fans didn't know they needed!

Review

I’m not sure who the fans are. But some of us would have been very happy to see Drakkon defeated and gone, never to reappear again.

After doing whatever sketchy things Drakkon was doing, he and Kiya return to his world. But not as he knew it. Dark Specter reigns supreme, most humans are either minions or dead, and the remaining people are Scorpina, Kimberly, Trini, and Bulk from a different world. Oh, and Finster 5. If one wanted a reunion. Here it is. This is clearly meant for fans of Shattered Grid. But it’s depressing because it seems like things only got worse without evil Tommy around.

And he’s…pretty much useless here. If Kiya had gone herself with the white coin, everything would have turned out likely precisely the same. Fans of dystopian literature will enjoy the serious and depressing tone of the first issue as Finster and, Drakkon work together to restore powers to the Rangers.

Two are dead. And one is too traumatized to be a ranger, while Bulk steps up to the pitch, and he’s ready to play ball to save their friends and maybe humanity too. But the goal of how stopping Dark Specter will fix anything is unclear. But hey. It’s only the first issue. This story’s dystopian themes are all over, including the trauma and fear of their dire situation. But the worldbuilding was a little weird.

The design for the characters is excellent, reflecting who they are as adults, not teenagers, and their trauma well. The art in this regard also yields well to the nicely on scenes and designs for the new ranger suits.

The dialogue is great, and Drakkon gets beat up multiple times, which is enjoyable. But for some reason, the writers are determined to keep him alive when he is probably the most annoying character in the story. Honestly, though, the story would be better and more attractive.

So does this mean that the events happening in the main power ranger comic set up a spinoff featuring Kiya and Drakkon, or will that all connect again somehow?

Final Thoughts

If you liked previous stories about Drakkon and want to see the Ranger Slayer again and you were fascinated by Lord Drakkon, give it a read. It's not bad. But not my cup of tea.
