Recap
The psionic foursome find themselves digging deeper into the mystery of "them". Stranded in space and now freed...temporarily...from their captors. The gang discovers they're only one ship in a massive plethora of ships trapped in orbit around a blue dwarf star.
The team hothead, Hazard forces them into action to explore the other ships and find their own, as you can imagine things don't go according to plan. The team however find some clues as to where their powers come from and why they were abducted but not before getting themselves nipple deep into deadly trouble.
A mysterious figure appears upon the final pages who may finally shed some real light on how this hodge podge group of people were forced into such a bizarre situation but even those potential answers raise more questions.
Review
Fred Van Lente is clearly working up to something akin to a summer blockbuster space action movie even if the pacing is slow and steady. He mixes in the right amount of quirky fun dialogue, intrigue and bloody action to keep the reader engrossed in the story. While it wouldn’t have been a bad thing for things to move at a bit faster pace, it almost like he’s reading your mind when the issue comes to an end with a huge “WAIT WUT?!?” moment in closing.
As with the first issue, Renato Guedes is absolutely slaying this art. It has a beautiful mix of realism blended with heavy sci-fi that makes each and every page a visual treat. Despite the characters having a Voltron/Super Sentai-esque uniformity, every character looks great and visually appealing. When combined with strong character writing by Van Lente it’s a no-brainer of a winning combination.
Final Thoughts
If you love great sci-fi action, a good mystery and/or beautiful art this book is basically all you need wrapped up in a tidy little package. It may have taken decades to see the Psi-Lords name on a book again, but everything about this series so far has proven worth the wait.
