Recap

With the dastardly Scion defeated, the Astro-Friends have about 30 seconds to bask in the glory before it all goes south again. The Widower clan they've been on the run from finally catches up to them but this time the Psi-Lords are more experienced with their powers and it gets bloody fast.

We also get a look into the other clans trapped around the Vampire Star, in case you were wondering how all of these super powered clans found some way to coexist without constant civil war well then here ya go! If that ain't enough we basically get to meet a hardcore version of Lion-O that ain't having no shenanigans from any clan Widower or Astro-Friend. As such our Scooby Gang of super people are about to get a lesson in cosmic politics which will determine if they get to live another day or be slaughtered by the legion of really pissed Widowers with a space council's seal of approval.

Review

While this issue isn’t particularly high action or brain teasingly deep, seeing characters really find their niche is highly entertaining. The balance of quirky humor, oddball space shenanigans and the occasional brutal battle has found it’s zen like flow in Psi-Lords#5. Also the small parts where Artisan’s psychic powers continue to grow and we see that Scion is not in fact dead are brief but juicy enough to rev up the hype train.

Fred Van Lente and Renato Guedes are building a genuinely interesting cosmic landscape that Valiant definitely can use. Prior to this if X-O Manowar wasn’t involved space shenanigans were rarely a thing. Divinity added some intergalactic deliciousness to the Valiant universe as well but considering how aside from his first adventure and Eternity were heavily Earth based you can see how there’s still a ridiculous amount of room for expansion. This issue even has some callbacks to the most recent X-O Manowar run that was highly acclaimed early on but was sidetracked by Harbinger Wars 2 so that was pretty amazing even if it’s not explosive in impact right outta the gate. Bottom line, whether you’re a huge fan of the book itself or not you gotta be neck deep in denial or smoking PCP to deny the great layers this book is adding to the worlds of Valiant in general.

Final Thoughts

Some solid humor, some bloody action and juicy world building, Psi-Lords is doing big things albeit subtle at times and the Valiant universe is all the better for it.
