Psi-Lords #6: Another Life

Renato Guedes has already done issue after issue of mindblowing artwork but this one takes it up a notch by taking it down one, the opening page alone of the band about to rip it is basically flawless. Who would have thought that taking this surreal yet concrete art and applying it to something as simple as a few scenes in a nightclub would produce such beautiful results?

Writer Fred Van Lente doesn’t slouch this issue either, the implications of Artisan and his new found “ally” as well as his newly attained levels of power are as ominous as the developments are exciting. That would have been plenty of fuel to add to the fire alone but uniting the warring clans together in hope of escape from the Starwatchers and the vampire star Nihilo despite them knowing why they were drafted is nuts.

Yet another example of Van Lente taking a cool but familiar concept and turning it on its ear. The saga of the Psi-Lords somehow manages to give some answers while digging up a ton of new questions to this cosmic conundrum but never feels daunting or like it’s spinning wheels but getting nowhere. Each revelation as it goes weaves a much bigger tapestry of this grand space odyssey that just draws you in deeper as it goes. Following this book and seeing these characters flirt with annihilation albeit unknowable to them leaves you with bated breath by the final page. It strikes with an almost classical literature appeal akin to something like Paradise Lost, Faust or Dorian Grey but sprinkles in just enough levity to not become pretentious. Van Lente and Guedes are truly crafting something amazing and doing it with the sort of skill you desire all team books to have.
