Recap

Stink meets the fan, as the fusion bomb warred over strikes the vampire star Nihilo. Artisan is slain by the venomous Widower, Vadim and the rest of the Astro Friends are stuck between warring with Widower and their remaining enemies and trying to stop Nihilo from going supernova. To top it all off Beacon seems to have figured out the true purpose of....well....everything, the Starwatchers, the gyre, the vampire star, all of it! What that leads to is a twist none of the Psi-Lords were prepared for.

Review

So after seven issues of mystery and intrigue this issue is a lot more straightforward. Fred Van Lente unleashes some rock-solid answers which leads us into the next era for the Astro Friends. The reveal of the true purpose of the Psi-Lords serves as more than just narrative moving forward, we also get some insight on why they were given their specific power sets and some potential problems brewing on the horizon.

Most pressing in this issue and future issues, of course, will be the possession of Hazard by the cosmic monster Ravenrok from whom the Psi-Lords get their powers. On the surface the main problem is, how will our heroes get their friend back? But another element to this is the fact Ravenrok is a bloodthirsty monster and Hazard well…to say she takes after said bloodlust is a bit of an understatement. How this will play out is more than enough meat to keep ya on the hook. Fred Van Lente masterfully sprinkles in these sorts of problems while also building the first steps to another incredible journey.

The issue ends with the Psi-Lords declining to return to Earth and chasing Ravenrok deeper into the cosmos. Officially dubbed Star-Watchers on the way to other Gyres similar to Nihilo’s system, we can only expect much more of the mystery and mayhem that’s made the first 8 issues of Psi-Lords such an increasingly interesting read. Valiant has a truly winning team running the show here, with Guedes ridiculously beautiful art making every page literal eye candy and Van Lente’s tactful use of humor, raw action and cosmic intrigue it’s a undeniable that one of the most seductive reads of 2019 will stay strong in 2020.
