Review

In it’s second issue, Red Agent: Island of Dr. Moreau leans heavy into the action spy genre as Red and Avril find themselves deep undercover in New Orleans amongst some truly shady people.

If there is one thing this issue does well, it’s capture a fun and engaging dynamic between the two lead characters. As we see the return of Ditto, there are undeniable Charlies Angels vibes in the best way possible, helping to give the issue an exciting flair. Luckily, there is only a brief pause in the action as the duo race to uncover the truths behind such horrific cross-species.

The fast-paced and rather violent action in Red Agent: Island of Dr. Moreau #2 is ultimately what makes this issue so thrilling though. It’s an example of a book that knows how to have fun even when dealing with some darker aspects in the overarching story line. It’s certainly not the most complex series on the shelves, instead opting for a much more straightforward storytelling approach, but it’s exciting nonetheless.

The artwork is mostly stellar, with vivid colors and just the right touch of blood to make the action really pop. The letters are also noticeably well done, without intruding on the action but still developing the character’s interactions with ease. As we transition into the second issue the narrative is getting more time to breath with different twists and turns, helping to give the impression that it won’t be slowing down any time soon. The real downfall of this issue is the dialogue, however. Issue #1 had moments of cheesy dialogue, but they appear more prominent in issue #2. While I can overlook some as toying with the notion of camp and just having fun, the fighting banter starts to detract from the punch the issue could really have.

Overall, Red Agent: Island of Dr. Moreau #2 is a book that might not win over any new fans, but it is definitely a thrilling continuation for those looking for more of Red and Avril.

Final Thoughts

Red Agent: Island of Dr. Moreau #2 leans heavy into the action spy genre with plenty of great character moments, but could benefit from a more serious approach to its themes.
