Recap

Jason heads to an abandoned prison in Mexico to pick up the trail of the Underlife. There he gets more than he bargained for as 4 separate plot threads are fired off at once! Red Hood finds the thing he's been looking for in an Underlife Bio Lab, Bizarro and Artemis fight to get back home from another dimension, Wingman makes his presence known and makes Red Hood an offer, Jason finds a truly unexpected long lost Titan in the Basement AND a dog randomly becomes Jason's best friend!

Review

All in all a decent issue, albeit pretty weirdly paced. There were some big revealing moments including the whereabouts of Bizarro and Artemis, who have been missing for some time without Jason’s knowledge. Also interesting is the return of a hero I won’t reveal here who I don’t recall having seen since 2012 in the Teen Titans. Likewise Wingman is such a strange blast from the past who is apparently working to cleanse Gotham? Why is everybody always trying to cleanse Gotham? Why not head down the coast and cleanse Bludhaven first? I did appreciate Jason employing a little bit of detective skill as he travels through the prison, definitely made him feel like a Batfam member.

This issue has some weirdness, the thing Jason has been chasing for 5 months is just found with a “meh, there is is” and a quick generic “we did it Roy”. The Wingman reveal was pretty strange and just as with his other appearances came basically out of nowhere and ended just as quickly. Odd. I did like the dog showing up and instantly befriending Jason for some reason but knowing Jason it’ll probably turn out to be a robot spying on him or just plain old get killed for dramatic effect. Oh well, maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll make great friends with it for a while, it’ll get a wholesome sweet issue with tons of heartwarming moments, then it’ll get killed for dramatic effect, or turn out to be a robot.

I thought the art by Pete Woods was really good for the most part, although at times he draws faces a little funny, it’s mostly shadow related and it’s pretty minor but still worth mentioning. That said Jason in costume looks killer and the small amount of action we have this issue looks great. I also really liked the way the dog looked and Bizarro’s alternate universe design is pretty cool.

Final Thoughts

A decent issue with a lot of setup for later stuff and a bit of wrap up of previous stuff. A lot of flow is lost in the middle ground but otherwise I thought the issue was pretty fun.
