What You Need to Know:
Kevin has taken a potion to detect the trail of the Questing Beast. Fearing that he is on the precipice of some Epic quest he decides to pursue the trail. Unfortunately, he lost track of the time and he was supposed to meet Magda his wife for a fundraiser. Kevin is lost in a Rose Garden seeking the Beast.

Meanwhile, Magda is confronted by someone who recognizes that she is a witch and that someone happens to be the Superintendent of the School system! He also seems to have intimate knowledge of witchcraft and seems immune to her attack of Bewilder Dust. Not content to be a regular creep, this Incubus, he pulls Magda into the Boiler Room. He sees all of her Charms and knows the defenses. He shows the needle-like tongue in his mouth and uses it to take a drink of Magda’s Blood.

What You’ll Find Out:
Kevin finally contacts the Beast, and he appears to have met a small Imp. They see Kevin and panic. They bolt and at that moment the Potion wears off completely, and Kevin is sick to his stomach. He tries to take the second dosage of the potion, but he loses his footage.

What Just Happened?

The Umbra Sprite speaks to her daughters and continues to plot to find the Fisher King, whom if she kills she will plunge the world into darkness.  Her daughter burst in with the news that an Incubus has the information on the Pendragon. They know that he has taken Magda, Kevin’s wife, and they know everything about him. His home, her memories, and even his children’s names. The Sprite seeks this opportunity to reach into the Fairy Realm and extract a surprise for Kevin, but she knows that they need to tread carefully, so not to lose sight of the Fisher King if The Mage should perish.

Kevin wakes up just in time to take Hugo to his school bus. He finds out that Magda is not home and neither is Randa, but he just thinks they left for school early. He sets Hugo on the Bus, but notices that this is not exactly right. The bus is full of Red Caps! Little Gremlins or Gnomes that are in the employ of the Sprite. Kevin tries to stop them as they head into the Mist and away from sight. They are prepared and blast the Pendragon with a cannon.

The bus slips away and Kevin runs to his house to save Magda and Randa. He is greated at the front door by an Ogre’s fist, as he shatters the house. Well looks like Kevin Matchstick is in over his head again!

Final Thought:
The mark of a good hero is the way they survive through the trials and tribulations that they endure. That said this is the beginning of the true suffering that Kevin will face. Next to losing his family, that Ogre’s punch seems like a love tap. The feeling of loss and the fear of losing his family is conveyed very well, and this book contains both intense emotion and action. I confess to a more personal connection as a fan, having the honor of my letter to the author printed in the letters column. This is a great story, and this chapter picks up the tempo and raises the stakes to a new level for Kevin Matchstick.
