What You Need to Know:
A Brief scene as Magic is upset that Ninjak held her back when she tried to follow Ray and Jessie into the Deadside. But Ray is blind and he is in trouble. He has a rather large gun, but the only eyes that he has are the Blood Hound’s.

Overwhelmed by the horde, Ray and The Hound make their final stand as Ray unsheathes the Sword he took from Ninjak. He takes many a Demon’s head, but soon it is inevitable, and they swarm him.

What You’ll Find Out:

At a crucial moment, The Shadowman steps through a portal to save Ray and Jessie and the Bloodhound.

He offers to take them to the Dealmaker or Baron Samedi but warns them he is not to be trusted. “His word is his bond, but you may not Fully Realize what you are agreeing to.”

Ray holds Jessie close and says “I have nothing to lose.”

What Just Happened?
Back in the Project Omen Bunker, (I am assuming this was in the past but it’s not explained). We see our scared Friend Pete, who opens a cell with Rampage in it. He sits with his brother and the discuss the past and their Future. He is enthusiastic to help Pete (The Scared Man) and offers to be his weapon.

Back in the Deadside, The Bloodhound leads Bloodshot through a gauntlet of Skeletons. They finally arrive at an emaciated husk of a decayed man sitting on a throne. His disheveled garb marks him as more of an aristocrat than the mindless rabble that Ray has fought so far.

The interaction takes place in various times lines that is hard to understand for Ray. The Baron says that this realm is not for mortal Minds to comprehend, and he shows Ray that he has already granted his request and fixed Jessie. In the process, he ages Jessie several years.

The Baron asks a Favor of Bloodshot. He asks him to kill someone but does not tell him whom. At that point, Ray and Bloodhound are teleported from a swirling Vortex to the Far Future 4002 AD!

Back in the Present, Jessie, now much older, walks through a similar portal to meet her mother and Ninjak. She has aged considerably and is dressed only in a Rain Poncho. This is where she resembles the first pages of the series again.

Next time, the Origin of Blood Hound!

Final Thought:
Now the pieces are coming together! Ray transported into the distant future via Magic. Jessie aged several years, and the clandestine Shadowman and Ninjak, it all is falling into place. I was confused at first as to the timeline with The Scarred Man and Rampage, but that’s a small part that I will not pick as a reader. This is reminiscent of the Magik’s X-Men story and origin while taken to the dimension Limbo and aged several years under the Dark Magician Belcasco and after Storm. There are some very similar notes in this. Lemire must have read that story years ago. The Art is still stellar and Renato Guedes continues to impress. The Deadside dreamscape is really creepy and it is beautifully rendered. I love the almost fuzzy coloring in these, with textures of Color pencils. It suits the story quite well.
