Review
Robyn Hood Vigilante #1 kicks off an exciting new chapter for the character that is violent and action-packed, but also just a lot of fun.
There is an interesting dynamic in this book, and many others at Zenoscope, that finds the characters being taken seriously enough to tell heartfelt and worthwhile stories but also remaining lighthearted enough to have fun. The first issue of Robyn Hood Vigilante captures this feeling quite well, showing that the creative team has a great understanding of the character and where this story is going.
While it does take the time to build a narrative in the early pages with plenty of dialogue, it’s important to remember that this is a six-part story. Taking the time to build a story that proves to be worthwhile is something I can appreciate and this team doesn’t forget to weave plenty of action to keep you hooked. The end is an intense chain of events that sets up issue #2 in a crazy way, but it also shows that it’s only going to get more exciting from here.
When given the opportunity to shine, the visuals really come through with well-paced action and popping colors. The character work is consistent and the drama holds up well, but some of the dialogue heavy sequences hamper the pacing. By the issue’s end however, it seems all of those minor issues fade away as the plot falls into motion.
Ultimately, Robyn Hood Vigilante #1 is a great start to a series that finds the character in a very new place, but still driven by the same badass tenacity. While the future looks quite dangerous with the introduction of some deadly robots designed specifically to take Robyn Hood down, the series feels poised to just get better and better.
Final Thoughts
Robyn Hood Vigilante #1 is a great start to a series that feels poised to just get better and better.
