Recap

  • The Runaways are back! Not even a global pandemic, a seemingly endless contentious election and a possible Tik Tok shutdown can stop Gert, Chase, Victor, Molly, Nico, Karolina and Gib.
    • And a new challenge beckons as they explore one of the most terrifying Marvel Universe locations ever– HIGH SCHOOL!
    • It goes better for some than others.
    • For those who don't think High School is an authentic Marvel Universe location, you may be interested that the X-MEN come calling for the Runaways' own Molly Hayes.

Review

The issue begins with Gib adjusting rather well with panels of him doing his best playing on the high school football team. Rainbow Rowell then transitions into the morning of a school day with the team’s personal DoomBot giving the team instructions of when to be home by. We have a cute interaction between the cast as their day begins.

Rowell gives us a sweet scene of Nico comforting Karolina as she continues to feel powerless. She comforts her with words that things will get better, while also using the actions of taking her to a beach to cheer her up. While it’s oddly cloudy the one day they go, Nico uses one of her spells to create sunlight in hopes that it’ll boost Karolina’s mood even a little bit. Rowell continues to deliver wonderful scenes of this couple and showing how they are a strong support system for each other.

I love the scenes we get of Gert adjusting to returning to high school. With her being a character in the past that died, she missed out on the many decisions and experiences the others got over the years.

Andres Genolet does a great job with showing the slice of life nature with their art. During the fight scene of the team against Wolverine and Pixie, Genolet can easily adapt from simple high school scenes to a fight scene when needed.

Dee Cunniffe does a great job with the color of the abilities of characters in this issue. The noticeable standouts are for when Nico uses a spell and when Pixie comes in towards the end. I absolutely adore the coloring of Pixie’s wings.

Final Thoughts

For fellow X-Men fans, they will absolutely love the second half of this issue. The appearance of Wolverine and Pixie coming in for a rescue mission is a fun Krakoa connection and I’m very curious to see how the next issue continues this. I absolutely adore the scenes showing how Nico is a huge support system for Karolina. If you enjoy the slice of life idea for superheroes then this is the issue for you.
