Runaways #34: Distress Call?

Writer Rainbow Rowell excels when it comes to character interaction and being able to breathe life into a character that is a guest star. While there are many funny moments in Wolverine’s reactions, the best moments of this issue is how Rowell writes Pixie. While Pixie has had many fun writers over the years, this issue shows how adaptable the character is no matter the situation or the group she finds herself with. We get to see very funny differences between the norm of the Runaways driving a “mystery machine” while Wolverine and Pixie are used to teleportation and Krakoan gates for travel.

After everyone realizes the miscommunication on if Molly was the mutant in distress, the team and our lovable guest stars join up to search for that scared mutant who is really reaching out. On their search, Molly steps into this odd void. Chase, Nico, Old Lace, Pixie, and Wolverine step in after her only to find monsters lurking around. I never thought how much I would’ve wanted to see Nico and Pixie teaming up to fight giant ice cream monsters and it’s everything I loved. Those scenes were a huge standout. 

Artist Andres Genolet is phenomenal when it comes to creating great facial expressions as well as drawing the fight scenes. The way his art can shift from seeing creepy monsters to a more goofy version of them from a double use of Nico’s spell is fun to see. What I can always rely on is how amazing the coloring in this series is by Dee Cunniffe. I especially adore the way the colors work on Pixie and Wolverine.
