Recap

RUNAWAYS reaches the landmark LEGACY #100! The cult classic’s cult has grown and Rainbow Rowell and Andrés Genolet usher the Runaways into the Century Club! Ever since #1 and #18, RUNAWAYS has been known for its twists, but the last few issues have revealed some of the biggest twists in the book’s history. The biggest and craziest issue of RUNAWAYS yet is here and you better put on your fancy clothes and get out the party hats.

Review

The issue starts with a sweet moment between Karolina and Nico as they are soon to be interrupted by the Light Brigade from Karolina’s homeworld. In a shocking revelation, we discover The Light Brigade is here due to Karolina reaching out to them to take her. In this conversation we learn that they apparently got over blaming her for the destruction of the planet as well as Xavin still being alive. Yes, I said it, Xavin is alive and thriving!

It’s bittersweet for the reveal that we see of future Gert explaining her purpose being here, to save Chase from his dangerous path. It shows a lot how Gert is giving Chase a better future when he did the same for her. It speaks a lot about their unconditional love for each other even when it’s platonic.

After future Gert vanishes with Chase, we see the team saying their goodbyes as Karolina embarks on a new journey. Nico gives a kiss, and hands the Staff of One to the love of her life. This decision by Rowell was a bold, yet fun choice as it makes me incredibly curious to see what Karolina does while in possession of the Staff. After some heartfelt goodbyes, we see Alex keep his tabs on his old friends. Passing the time while eating some chocolate chip cookies sounds ideal. I do love the way he is drawn.

And in a jaw dropping final panel, we get a striking glimpse of our favorite Skrull, Xavin! It’s an incredible decision to retcon Xavin dying as we never actually saw them get killed directly on panel. Genolet and Cunniffe did an outstanding job giving us a modern look for Xavin. I am going to miss this artistic duo in this book as they are such a perfect pair in bringing teen heroes to life. This creative team sends off our favorite team onto a new adventure ahead of them.

Final Thoughts

I would really like to take a moment to thank this creative team from the bottom of my heart. You all endlessly poured love into such a beloved and cherished group of characters. A cast that is loved so dearly by so many fans. This amazing creative team reunited a fractured and displaced group of friends back into becoming an unbreakable family. Thank you.
