Review
The latest Savage Avengers is a trip through time as we trace the roots of Kulan Gath and the Sorcerer Supreme. Dr. Strange uses the blood of his enemy to travel through time so he can learn the secrets of his enemy. We see the secrets of Kulan Gath’s power, the secrets of his dark knowledge, and discover the connection between Gath and everyone’s favorite Cimmerian warrior… CONAN!
The story flows well and imparts the backstory of one of Conan’s most nefarious enemies. I liked the direction they took it and the byplay between Sorcerer Supremes was a nice touch. We also see the beginnings of the relationship between Strange and Elektra which is interesting and should make for an interesting story next issue. The transition between the Sanctum Sanctorum to Hyperboria was well done. Not to be outdone, the art transitions well between the colorful and eccentric stronghold of Dr. Strange and the gritty world of the titular barbarian. The backdrops and locales move the story well and never took away from the unfolding tale. Writer Gerry Duggan and artist Butch Guice weave an engaging tale together and with the coming together of powers in the next issue I can’t wait to see what they make. They seem to be setting up a story full of action and mystery and the next issue promises a return of Conan and the start of an adventure to end Kulan Gath.
