Savage Avengers #2
THE HYBORIAN HUNT CONTINUES! Stranded in the distant past, Conan must enlist a team of Marvel's most savage super heroes if they hope to withstand the dangers of the Hyborian Age! But even if they can survive a barbaric new era filled with fearsome threats around every corner, the Savage Avengers still have to contend with the cybernetic soldier stalking Conan across the timestream…DEATHLOK THE DESTROYER! And if that isn't enough - what happens when an even deadlier enemy sets his sights on Conan? Plus…did we mention the dinosaur?!
Time for issue two of Savage Avengers! This team is really what sells this book for me, not only do Cloak and Dagger shine in this issue (again), but we get some amazing funny moments from characters I didn’t even know had a humorous bone in them. Issue two starts where issue one left off, the team is split in three; Conan, Dagger and Agent Anti-Venom are dealing with an angry army, and this is one of my favorite parts in this issue. David finds new and exciting ways for Dagger to use her light powers here, and I’m all for it. David, along with the incredible artist, are helping these characters grow in interesting and exciting new ways. There is a page during this fight alone that completely sells me on this series!
Next we have Daredevil and Cloak in a coliseum, they have some very fun interactions and go up against some heavyweight enemies. David does an excellent job of putting Daredevil into a new and dangerous role, mentor and leader. This may take place in Conan’s time, but Daredevil is clearly showing herself to be a leading role. Cloak also pulls off an amazing stunt, and David once again shows that he has all these character’s voices down!
Lastly, Black Knight and Weapon H get into a bar bawl and we get some very funny dialog between those two, very entertaining, and we even see some shocking growth for Weapon H, who I’m new to reading, but I find myself enjoying the character enough to go back and read about him.
The art is also, once again, beautiful! Carlos shows off this time, and lets loose. Showing some amazingly beautiful art for Dagger and Daredevil, and I’m not sure whose idea it was to draw a freaking light bow for Dagger, but I’m here for it! Each character looks unique and keeps a similarity to their other appearances in the marvel universe. The fight scenes are so spectacular, but also the environment is extremely well done. The buildings and landscapes feel familiar, yet very different as to tell us that this isn’t our time/world.
The colors also really bring out the art, I’m continually impressed by this art team! I mean Devil Dinosaur has never looked cooler than under this talent. And I’m sure you all are getting sick of me saying it, but Cloak and Dagger look amazing and the way their powers are shown is something else! Every character under this team gets some very awesome moments to show off their talents!
While Savage Avengers may have been made to show off Conan, and while this arc takes place in his time, this is a team book through and through. While Conan remains a force in both the series and story-line, Daredevil showing off her leadership skills here make this arc and series feel way different then just a "Conan Team-up Book" if Conan eventually leaves the series (but please no), this has full potential to end up an Avengers mainstream title! David is showing off his superhero style and I'm loving it!
