Review

The ‘Savage Avengers’ continue to live up to their name in issue #3, taking on Kulan Gath in a bloody and brutal fight that finally sees the whole team’s roster joining together!

The absolute best aspect of this series so far has been that it simply knows what it is and what it hopes to accomplish. This is a violent comic filled with violent characters, and the story is perfectly suited for them. I had reservations about how the creative team could find a believable way to join these characters together, but this issue is proof that can not only be achieved, but done so successfully. Conan continues to steal the spotlight, this time donning a sword composed of the Venom symbiote, but only after he uses a barely living Wolverine as a human weapon. It’s wild and full of death, but there is also the perfect amount of dark humor, which is exactly what I want out of this series.

The strengths of this series are arguably predicated on the artwork that depicts such violence. Without the stunning and sometimes morbid visuals, this series simply wouldn’t be what it is. Mike Deodato Jr. brings a unique flair to the artistic direction that will undoubtedly be missed upon his recently announced exit from Marvel Comics. Issue #3 is one beautiful panel after another, creating a nonstop action-packed book that is just so much fun to look at. Whoever is set to take over will have some big shoes to fill.

With a script that knows what the series should be and artwork that delivers on every level, it’s hard to find many serious complaints about Savage Avengers #3. The pacing is enjoyable and now that we have everyone together, it feels like a fully realized team-up with serious consequences. This is the type of quality that can be expected from a book spearheaded by two industry veterans. It’s consistently engaging and I really appreciate that as a fan.

Overall, Savage Avengers #3 is a fundamentally solid book. The story advances in an interesting way, supported with gorgeously violent artwork. This is the type of savagery fans have certainly been looking for, and now that the Marrow God has finally risen, there could be much more in the very-near future.

Final Thoughts

'Savage Avengers #3' does the impossible and finds a way to bring this - shall we say diverse - cast of violent characters together for a grim adventure packed full of stunningly dark visuals. This is a book that knows what it is, and excels because of it.
