Recap

THE QUEST TO KILL KULAN GATH BEGINS! Folks, we won’t mince words. Kulan Gath has got to go. If Conan The Barbarian, Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom can’t do it, then it can’t be done. Plus, what is the fate of Kulan Gath’s guest, Doctor Voodoo?

Review

Another issue of Savage Avengers, another brutal fun-filled spectacle of violence and dry humor from some of Marvel’s most ruthless characters. Plus, who doesn’t want to see Doctor Strange takes things to the next level with the Iron Mage?!

Savage Avengers #9 is much like the rest of the issues in this series, an absolute blast that simply can’t be taken too seriously. Its a series that has always thrived in the near-camp levels of epic action, and while this issue captures that essence, it also brings something new and exciting into the fray with the introduction of the Iron Mage.

As fun as the series is, now that we have reached the ninth issue and are still attempting to kill Kulan Gath, I have to wonder how long this will continue on as well as what is next. Also, where are the other Savage Avengers? This series was launched with the inclusions of characters like Venom and Wolverine but it seems more inclined to just follow Conan around as he interacts with a lot of different characters. While this is still okay, it doesn’t feel like a teamup series and I miss the dynamic the other characters brought.

The artwork from Zircher and company remains solid, and while it doesn’t quite have the flair that Deodato Jr.’s had, it is still enjoyable. Conan deciding to end Kulan Gath his own way was certainly a high point in the entire series visually. The more instances we get like that the better!

Savage Avengers #9 isn’t a perfect book, but it still has all the elements that have made the series shine so far. Fans will find plenty to love and even those looking to jump in on this issue won’t be terribly lost. As the fight against Kulan Gath still continues, I would like to see more of the team dynamic return and for this plot to at least show signs of a conclusion, but at the end of the day I’ll still be returning no matter what.

It’s just too fun!

Final Thoughts
