Savage Avengers Annual #1: The Widow, The Devil, and the Barbarian

Savage Avengers Annual #1 is a nonstop action-packed thrill ride that finds Conan unusually in his element despite being in an entirely new world. Along with some surprisingly well-suited companions, the group proves to be a force to be reckoned with against some quite despicable people. Is it worthwhile though?

That purely depends on what you hope to find within the first annual of Savage Avengers. Conan is a character that is always fun to see unleashed into a situation that warrants rampant slaughter. So, if that’s something you are interested in, you will find more than enough to love about this book. If you are looking for a weighty and consequential story that dives into the internal conflict Conan is experiencing with this world, you might be disappointed.

This series has truly never been one to shy away from over-the-top violence and spectacle, even if it comes at the cost of elevating the storytelling. Savage Avengers #1 follows that trend quite closely. It’s a seriously fun time, but it’s not groundbreaking by any means. Watching Conan team up with both Black Widow and Daimon the Son of Satan is remarkably entertaining, who wouldn’t want to watch this trio wreak havoc on a bunch of baddies?

Is Conan’s incessant cat calling of Black Widow a little much? Probably. It’s funny at first but quickly wears out its welcome. The attempt at humor is welcome in such a violent series and given the context of the story this recurring joke did make sense. It was just a bit cringy. Otherwise, the issue hits a lot of the same great notes this series has tapped into time and time again. It’s a dark and violent good time that knows when to have fun.

The visuals have been a bit scattered for the series since Mike Deodato Jr.’s exit from Marvel, but this issue is still really well done. The action sequences are enjoyably paced and the characters feel dynamic. The details just aren’t on the level of the first arc of the series and that’s OK, it’s still a pleasure to look at.

Overall, those who have been enjoying the Savage Avengers series will find plenty to have fun with in the first annual. It’s a bit inconsequential, as is so often the case with annuals, but it’s still a really great time. You won’t regret picking it up, that’s for sure.
