Recap

Conan, victim of a shipwreck, finds himself waylaid by a slave ship in shackles. The slavers should know better than to keep a Cimmerian down!

Review

I was dubious when Gerry Duggan, best known for his Deadpool run, was announced for SSOC, one of my favorite series of days gone by. But soon after I started paying attention, Duggan wrote the stellar Dead Rabbit (which was cancelled at no fault of Duggan’s due to a copywrite snafu) and the seriously unbelievable Doctor Strange Best Defense issue (which I loved) and my excitement began to build. I mean, I KNOW I like Jason Aaron but suddenly I’m a Gerry Duggan fan too? What I’m saying is I really really liked this issue, possibly more than Aaron’s premiere issue! How did this happen?!

Ok I’m being a bit silly but what I’m really getting at is this book is great, a bit wordy without being overly dense, interesting without getting convoluted, and the end had a hook to keep my interest. Rock solid start to what I hope will be a long running series.

I thought the art by Ron Garney was great. I love the way he draws monsters and I appreciated the detail in his background work. The ship felt very organic at times with crew working and slaves groaning.

Final Thoughts

If you like Conan you'll like this blood soaked tale!
