Savage Sword of Conan #2
Recap
The second issue of Marvel's newest Savage Sword of Conan series has our titular hero venturing into Stygia in search of treasure, running afoul of a Stygian death cult (is there any other kind?!) and assaulting a librarian in the name of TREASURE!
Review
This issue was a decent amount of story progression with introducing the cult, having an amazingly drawn action sequence and nary a pistol in sight! It’s true, last issue was largely overshadowed by a bunch of dudes on the autism spectrum railing on the vision laid out in a 90 year old book series. (the aforementioned views are my own and based on personal experiences) Mud slinging aside I’m enjoying this series so far, although it is strangely paced but does have the feel Savage Sword often had classically of short somewhat self contained stories serving an overarching narrative.
Both current Conan books do feature a more articulate Barbarian than I’m used to, I haven’t decided whether I want to get used to it. As of now I’m not knocking either book for it but if neither series finds it’s proper voice soon scores will suffer….
I like Ron Garney’s art for the most part but there are some panels where his style grates with my taste, and Conan’s nose is crazy wide in a lot of panels for some reason (on such panel on the bottom of the page below). Burning people trees are cool though, visually.
I appreciate the Alex Ross covers to this series, which are reminiscent of the killer Frazzeta and Jusko covers that frequently adorned the classic series.
Final Thoughts
I like this arc so far, we'll see where we end up.
