Recap

Conan foils cultists using some Back to the Future esque environmental hazards before being teleported to Koga Thun in a way that just screams "move the plot along!" Before Koga Thun Conan refuses to give up any information despite a psychic probing of some kind, and manages to escape. Is Conan unwittingly leading his foes to their treasure? Almost certainly! All this and more in Savage Sword of Conan #3 in stores now!

Review

The trouble with Marvel’s 5 issue arc as opposed to many other publishers roomier 6 issues can be found in issues like this, that need to compact a traditional 3 act story into an uneven number of issues, sometimes making for a jampacked third issue. What I’m getting at is this issue feels very uneven and rushed on all fronts, even the art is done with a much heavier hand than previous issues with some panels looking like they were done with a roller.

That said, the positives; The fight with the cultists did feel very much like something out of Indiana Jones or a similar series. I liked the look of Koga Thun although Conan seemed weirdly calm and collected throughout the issue when confronted with magical weirdness. I did like Suty getting wounded mostly because it holds with my initial prediction of “no point learning his name he’ll be dead in no time.”

Regarding this review, the title of the review says it all. A misstep is correctable and I do think there’s plenty of time for the creators to turn this book around. I still like everyone involved I just don’t feel this issue is anyone’s best work.

Final Thoughts

Unfortunately this is the weakest entry yet in a series that I desperately want to love.
