Savage Sword of Conan #5
Recap
The final issue of the opening arc of Gerry Duggan and Ron Garney's Savage Sword of Conan features an inevitable betrayal and death, a couple fights one that is pretty anticlimactic (Suty goes down way fast) and one that for whatever reason delighted me, especially when Conan was beating Koga Thun with a stick, haha.
Review
A fairly strong finish to Gerry Duggan’s Savage Sword arc (first arc maybe? my understanding is creative teams change out between arcs) that went exactly where I expected, but man it was a fun issue regardless. Between Conan’s ballsy defiance and Koga Thun’s arrogance, it felt exactly like a Conan story should. I do feel like I ought to point out the stories in Savage Sword of Conan were usually one offs, and this story definitely felt a bit decompressed in the middle. I like it all in all, and think the arc is definitely going to be worth a read collected.
Ron Garney’s art hits a new high point in the series, which had been a bit down since the stellar second issue artistically speaking. I looved Conan doing a flying knee into Koga Thun’s stupid lizard face and the splash page of Conan in the rain is spectacular.
Final Thoughts
A good end to a slightly overextended but otherwise decent first Savage Sword of Conan v2 arc.
