Review
The great thing about working for Comic Watch is that you get to read a ton of cool books before the majority of the general public. Be it destined for an LCS shelf or crowdfunding, requests for reviews pour in like a good dry gin. So when Scinematic Figments fell into my lap, I wasn’t sure what awaited me. What greeted me was an anthology with a great mix of sci-fi, horror, and humanity’s footprint. Who doesn’t love a story where chill-bumps and the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up?!
Author Bruno Catarino has assembled creative teams that have come together in fantastic unison to tell some really interesting stories that blend physcological horror and sci-fi, but doesn’t get lost in tropes that we normally see—not to mention that the stories do not run in order so the jump on point is is nothing to worry about.
I fell in love with how the visual pacing supports the rhythm of the storytelling. The shifting of panel sizes and unexpected angles create a sense of motion that makes each scene come alive. Even in the quieter moments, when it leans on the mood, engaging the reader to absorb the complete environment. It’s this very thing that made me fall in love with comic books!
Final Thoughts
Scinematic Figments is a shining example of great stories that aren’t always found on your LCS shelves. Scinematic Figments is a truly immersive experience. It’s great eye candy, filled with emotion in a brilliantly built world.
