Review

Animals make for great characters. Whether they are wrapped in political metaphor, searching for lost family in big cities, or reminding us to “just keep swimming,” it’s hard to not get wrapped up in any medium where animals are center stage.

Enter Scurry; a harrowing tale of survival, trust, and family. From cover to cover, Scurry is an infectious read with intoxicating art. Mac Smith’s brand of story-telling is one that can easily crossover into any generation and any fandom. Our heroes may be mice, but their hearts, souls, and ambition are larger than life. We are introduced to the colony as they are setting out to replenish their stock, however, things aren’t always what they seem. Rumors of a wrecked and abandoned truck with plenty of stock to go around catch the eyes of elders and a plan is set in motion. But not to be outdone, members of the colony may have other plans.

A post-apocalyptic world where animals are the main characters is a field filled with numerous works that have both amazed and fallen short with audiences. Scurry is definitely the latter; from cover to cover Mac Smith grabs you, sits you down, and prepares you for an all-out fabulous adventure. This book is so much more than cats chasing mice, birds chasing cats and mice, and wolves chasing everything. Smith’s character work is brilliant and smooth as is the pacing of the story, there isn’t one portion of this book that feels rushed or forced. Even though Scurry got its start as a webcomic in 2017, this was my introduction to the book and I’m both upset that it took so long but I’m stoked that now I have this beautiful book in my possession, it absolutely sits comfortably on the “must read” list when recommendations are called for.

Final Thoughts

I want to talk more about how much I love this book but I don’t want to water down this review with a bunch of hollow adjectives and not seem authentic. Bottom line: Scurry is a must-read.
