Skrulls are alien lifeforms that shapeshift into anyone or anything. A faction of Skrulls is trying to infest planet earth and destroy us from the inside out. Fury is no longer working for S.H.I.E.L.D or the C.I.A. Instead, he has become a freelancer with secrets and friends in HIGH places. Outside organizations, he does his cases and investigates, bringing him to rural Iowa.
Review
I am huge into sci-fi and have been since I was a kid. I even went to space camp in the seventh grade. It’s my favorite genre, with fantasy coming in as a close second. Marvel embraces sci-fi like new technology, and alien invasions come to life in a way that I feel like that twelve-year-old girl with a telescope and a calculator making up calculations to meet extra-terrestrial beings. Thank you to Nick Fury. I get to meet them in the new Secret Invasion!
The opening panel gives the idea of Skrulls invading our rural population. So naturally, Fury investigates to see if it’s legitimate. Fading into the present day on a panel, we see Nick Fury at the C.I.A Headquarters in Virginia. He has an unscheduled meeting with Maria Hill. They discussed his investigation in Iowa in the previous weeks, and his findings appeared negative. That is until Fury’s tested. Nick Fury is the King of Secrets. He never forgets a deal or a secret with anyone. Maria Hill uses a secret tell sign, and [SPOILER]! Is this [SPOILER]? Have the Skrulls invaded [SPOILER] than [REDACTED]? Who will stop the Skrulls? How do we know who to trust anymore?
The suspense! This series is going to be so good; I already know it. Everything from the deception to the actual power of the Skrulls and humans! Dude, I cannot contain my excitement. I am so happy I read this one! I couldn’t put it down! I have not read much by Ryan North, but I understand he takes a non-conventional approach with his stories! That’s fantastic! What unconventional and mind-blowing storyline could we get with Nick Fury, some aliens, and Earth’s Mightiest heroes? The possibilities are endless.
North’s work is fun and engaging, but a comic storyline is nothing without the artwork. Artist Francesco Mobili highlights Secret Invasion with artwork complimenting the story’s suspense very well. This team gives unwonted joy to their work.
Final Thoughts
Secret Invasion, while not the first book I would've picked this morning at the comic store when new releases hit the shelves, was an unbridled success. I am pleasantly surprised. I will await each release of the Secret Invasion series to see what happens next. Great job, Ryan North and Francesco Mobili. You have captured our attention.
