Secret Warriors is about a group of Inhumans who were forced to run following the Hydrafication (I just made up a word!) of the country and the vilification of the Inhuman race, but literally none of that matters at this point, the team is beginning a new challenge!
Title: Secret Warriors #12 (final issue!?)
Writer: Matthew Rosenberg
Artist: Ramon Bachs
Colors: Isreal Silva
Publisher: Marvel Comics
What You Need to Know:
So the team basically formed as a response to Hydra Cap’s evil machinations and reformed in an effort to rescue Inferno’s niece. Throughout both arcs, there were many jokes (this series’ main strength is its humor, which is spot on and hysterical, the X-men issues in particular) and a fight or two. Although unlikely to win any best of awards (not through any failing of the comic, there was a lot of next levels incredible stuff last year) this series is definitely worth a readers time if nothing else as an almost parody of Secret Empire (initially) and the way the mutants and Inhumans work. (later)
What You’ll Find Out:
Quake walks up to an apartment, she’s confused when the couple thanks her for babysitting and leaves, she thought she was heading to Moon Girls birthday party, she brought cake. As she walks in, Moon girls greets her, suddenly there is a knock at the door, Dante has arrived, also with baked goods.
As the entire team (including Karnak, bringing the equivalent amount of cash for a cake) arrives in a similar fashion, Lunella’s evil plan is revealed! The team is playing Risk!
Who’s going to win? This issue was a surprising and amazing one, I’m not gonna tell you guys a thing that happens, suffice to say as in any game of Risk the unexpected happens, tempers flare, the board is flipped at one point, just like when real people play!
What Just Happened?
Besides Karnak somehow losing at Risk? This issue is the final issue of the series, so this issue serves more or less as an epilogue for the team, wrapping up loose ends in a way I wish more series would do. Not to mention I gotta give it to Rosenberg having the team play Risk for 20 pages was inspired, and as a finale, it was pretty awesome.
The combination of board games and cake with a globe-trotting superteam is something I wish more books would explore, maybe not that scenario exactly, but why can’t the Avengers just go to the zoo or something? Thor would brag about animals being bigger in Asgard, Cap would talk about how inhumane zoos used to be, Spider-man would be on his phone the whole time (kids these days) and so on. What I mean to say is as much as I like to complain about issues where nothing happens sometimes it is nice for the heroes to take a step away from the action and NOT find a supervillain delivering pizza or whatever, super people can have mellow days where they act like friends and have fun too.
I’m gonna be sorry to see this series go actually, I had a complaint or two a couple issues back but this is one of the funnier series I’m reading right now (funniest has gotta be the stellar Big Trouble in Little China Old Man Jack series) and I don’t really have anything else filling that niche.
Rating: 8/10
Final Thought:
An excellent sendoff to a decent series, definitely worth a read, I wish all the best to the team and look forward to their next project!
