Review
Sgt. Rock vs. the Army of the Dead #2 opens with a scene of undead Nazi officers drinking in a bar and having a few laughs. They are not worried about anything going wrong as they shoot each other and realize nothing is happening. They are still undead. I enjoyed this book because Bruce Campbell stays true to Sgt. Rock. The badass and his unrelenting unit that has graced comic book pages since the 1950s.
Sgt. Rock and the Easy Company all are willing to die to save humanity and do the right thing, including taking on zombie Nazis. Nazis in a bar shooting each other to see what happens and possibly getting ambushed by the Easy Company and their leader. This book goes so hard. I read it three times before I put it down to write this. It’s that well done. This close to Halloween, a good zombie story is a welcome treat. The storyline makes you nostalgic, and seeing the new twist on history with zombies was ingenious.
Introducing the concept of regeneration science into Nazi technology takes the story to new heights. The comic is taken higher with the assistance of the artwork, which is very Golden Age comic style. Dark and simple lines with subtle over compensations on details like hair and face. Eduardo Risso does not disappoint in making sure we feel like we are reading an old comic off your grandpa’s shelf: the ones in the attic that had a thick layer of dust on them and were faded brown. The pages were so brittle you had to be as light as a feather and couldn’t breathe to heavy with each turn of the page. Experiencing each panel for the first time – this is why we got into comics. We found a world untouched for years and made it our own. This team is bringing horror comic nostalgia all the way to the heart, and I am here for it. As Campbell’s DC debut, I am delighted to read this six-issue series and look forward to his partnership with DC growing.
Final Thoughts
Anyone who follows me as a reviewer knows I rarely enjoy horror comics. Which surprisingly is what I have been reading mostly these past few months. But I can tell you I have my calendar marked for Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #3. This series is well-written, and it reminds me of why I love comic books. Bruce Campbell has my attention, and I await to see what's yet to come.
