Shatterstar #5: Destiny

Shatterstar #5 had difficulty keeping my attention and did not get motivated until page 6. Don’t get me wrong, there is some quick action taking place as the plot is to keep Shatterstar on Mojo IV for high ratings. As the best gladiator, Shatterstar is the key and the Grandmaster pulls every string to keep his best opponent. The Grandmaster attempts to break Shatterstar down by showing him images of a possible legacy if he did not rebel. Now, this is where things get interesting.

The team of artists and colorists do a fantastic job of emulating emotion and provided excitement in the actions scenes.

Meanwhile, the tenants of Shatterstar, aka; Ben Gaveedra begin to devise a plan to break free from their holding cell and get to their landlord. Once they catch up to Shatterstar and prepare to join the fight, the Grandmaster effortlessly shows who’s boss on Mojo IV. Shatterstar caves and gives into this destiny to save his friends, his family. Shatterstar agrees to be the star, he will kill, he will be a GOD.

The Grandmaster snaps his fingers and sends the tenants home and welcomed by Rictor. This sets off the ratings and controls Shatterstar to adhere to his deal. Of course, there is a loophole and the fight for freedom continues. Mission accomplished and Shatterstar has made it home to his family.

As this Shatterstar solo miniseries has come to a close, for me it has been a fun read with just enough substance in each issue to push me and wonder what’s next. I really enjoyed the flashbacks and how Tim Seeley threw in a past lover to explain why Shatterstar and Rictor has a history of on an off again and again relationship. Seeley ends his run with a sweet ending with many possibilities for the story to continue.
