She-Hulk #7: Some Sort of Weird Radiation Kink

Well, it wouldn’t be a She-Hulk title without a zany Doctor Doom storyline! We’ve seen Jen face off against Doctor Bob Doom in Sensational She-Hulk and watched as Jen defended Doom’s son Kristoff Vernard from legal issues in Charles Soule’s She-Hulk, so it’s only fitting that we see Victor Mancha and his Doombot progress the “Doom Saga” further. I really enjoy seeing She-Hulk take on these different cases of varying seriousness. This one is clearly not that serious, and I dig it. I’m not super familiar with Victor Mancha as he joined the cast of Runaways in its second volume, and I’ve only read the first volume many, many years ago. But I love that Rainbow Rowell is bringing characters you wouldn’t expect to see in Jen’s world into the book.

The romance between Jen and Jack of Hearts continues to blossom, and I’m convinced something very bad will happen. It’s such an odd coupling, but there’s a lot of chemistry there within Rowell’s writing that makes me wish Jack will always be part of She-Hulk’s life. And maybe he will, who knows? They’re certainly an attractive couple, helped immensely with Luca Maresca’s pencils.

Speaking of Maresca, I major Sensational She-Hulk vibes from his artwork on this series. Especially in close-ups of Jen’s face. It takes me back to John Byrne’s work in the late 80s and early 90s, and I live for it. I’m not sure if Maresca’s intentionally influenced by Byrne, but it helps establish a consistent tone to the art of She-Hulk’s brand.

There’s a couple not-so-new characters brought back as villains in this issue, and I can’t say I’m invested in them or even interested in seeing their rivalry. We’ll discuss more about them next issue, but I do wish Rowell had a flashier villain or pair of villains for She-Hulk to battle.
