Recap
To save the town, Erica must take on the brood of monsters on her own. And Tommy is faced with a decision that means life or death.
Review
Claimed by many to be one of the best ongoing indie series of 2020, Tynion, Dell’edera & Muerto’s Something is Killing the Children steps into 2021 on a high pedestal for fans and they’ll be glad to know issue fourteen not only maintains but heightens the intensity and allure this title has created for itself!
Tynion adds major character growth with this issue! The supporting cast with James, Bian and Tommy who I feel has already lured fans with their uniqueness and affable nature continues to become more solidified as each issue passes! Whilst James becomes braver as his right hand role to Erica, something is constantly making me theorize Bian will play a bigger role than him despite the obvious likeness Erica sees herself in Bian’s character hence her drive to protect her.
Tommy is really stepping into that backseat hero role with his surprising in the moment idea of confessing to all the murders to try ward off the house of Slaughter from purging his town. An amazing scenario now created for that next issue!
Erica showcases her power not only with the introduction of ‘the game of nowhere’ which reveals to us not only the appearance of her monster Octo but a technique she can use to lure in and hunt the monsters down. Its in these moments we see the very intriguing relationship between Erica and Octo not only in the dialogue but brilliant subtle emotion caught in the artwork by Dell’edera here. The obvious hate but also sense of deception Octo wishes it could commence.
The highlight for me was the action scenes we see Erica kill off more monsters which I believe exhibits her physical attributes more than ever especially after what we seen happened to Aaron, she is a cut above.
The artwork in these panels are mesmerizing by Dell’edera and Muerto, like watching the animation come to life on the page.
Final Thoughts
This had that perfect mix of story/character building and intense action which shows why Tynion is one of the best current wrtiers today! If I were to show any comic reader at least one action page the outstanding artwork alone would lure them in to checking the title out! An outstanding issue that has set up an enthralling and highly anticipated ending to this arc!
