Sleep #1

Recap
Jonathan woke up to find that a horrible event had taken place, and the whole town is now on high alert.
Review
Ladies and gentlemen, this is how you start a series! Black and white comics are great. Black and white horror comics are really great. Zander Cannon has managed to take everything you love about the psychological aspect of horror and has created something special. The visuals are stunning and do a great job and making the small hairs on the back of your neck stand at attention, especially with the sporadic use of the color red. Cannon lures you in with clever plotting while filling the characters and their world with true emotion.
When we meet Jonathan, he’s running late for Sunday church, and to top it off, his friend Tabby has given him the rundown about a strange occurrence that happened last night that saw the town’s cattle viciously mauled. As the story unfolds, Cannon cleverly tacks a shade of red here and there, not to mention a few clever easter eggs in the coffee shop (spoiler-free, you gotta find them), that add to the stockpile of questions I have for issues 2-8! I’ve read this issue 3 different times, and I swear I find new things in the panel, or I’ve formulated more notes/questions; I love books like this!
This issue sets the perfect tone for what I feel is getting ready to happen. I get the idea that we are in store for something that feels like Cronenberg body horror…and I’m here for every panel!
Final Thoughts
Clever adjectives and metaphors aside, Zander Cannon has created a top-notch horror story that will scare the hell out of you.
