Recap

Love will always find a way.

Review

If there were ever a book that could be made into a nerdy Hallmark movie, it would be Slice of Life! I say that will all the love and enthusiasm I can. When I first caught wind of Slice of Life, it was on Kickstarter as a campaign to collect what Kat and Phil had already published on Webtoons. Being an absolute sucker for a good love story (shhh, don’t tell anyone), I took a shot and backed the campaign. I met Kat and Phil at last year’s Baltimore Comic-Con and shared a few words with them. In just a brief time with them, you could see, sense, and hear their passion for creating great stories. And that’s exactly what Slice of Life is.

The book starts with meeting the sisters, Ravyn and Lucy, as they plan to watch Ravyn’s favorite show, The Sword of Lady Vengeance. As the story progresses, you get a sense that while Lucy was rolling to her next get-together, Ravyn was rolling for initiative; however, their closeness shines brighter as the story goes on, which is a good thing because Lucy will need all the light to help her discover her true self.

The way Kat and Phil tell a story is adventurous and fun. They build characters and worlds that can stand with the most seasoned titles on any shelf in any comic shop. Now, while I am trying really hard to keep this review spoiler-free, I will say this book is loaded with really sweet-hearted parts that not only entertain but possibly could help someone feel comfortable and safe should they need it. That’s the ultimate testament to phenomenal storytelling when a book can stretch across to boundaryless readers. Now, story aside, the art and layout lend a gentle touch and add great emotional detail. It’s almost as if the art is its own love story to the characters.

Final Thoughts

Love is beautiful and Slice of Life will remind you of how beautiful it can be. You can read Slice of Life on Webtoons here and make sure you check out their Kickstarter for Slice of Life #2.
