Review

Rob Liefeld is no stranger to big, bold, and in-your-face comics. Over the years we have seen some really good creators take the helm and produce awesome depictions of G.I. Joe. Liefeld is no different and we can add his name to creators that know how to produce a really good G.I. Joe book. G.I. Joe is one of those franchises that need a certain attitude to go with the story this is where those famous Liefeld action sequences come in and shine.

Snake Eyes: Deadgame #1 is a non-stop action. Rob Liefeld and scripter Chad Bowers have teamed up and made this issue feel like you were in the theater with popcorn in hand. The creative team has banded together and come up with something special. The wide array of combat scenes come through in true Liefeld fashion and marry well with connecting Snake Eyes’ past without it being just another run-of-the-mill backstory, Rob knows how to navigate a good book and Deadgame is no exception.

One of the cool things about this book is Rob does a phenomenal job at capturing the classic feel of G.I. Joe but with a modern twist that is just so infectious that you feel the need to yell “YO JOE!” in the middle of the book when Snake Eyes is in the midst of a double-page spread battle with Kirigun. I would be remiss to not talk about Chad Bowers and how he took a non-vocal character and not over-doing it with forced captions but instead he made sure Snake Eyes has the familiar feel that has made him one of the most recognizable characters in pop-culture. Snake Eyes has always had this aura of beautiful violence and mystery and Rob Liefeld has captured it gloriously.

Final Thoughts

There is so much to enjoy with this book and serves as a solid introduction to G.I. Joe. I was excited when this project was announced and was not let down. Rob Liefeld has another hit on his hands for sure.
