Something is Killing the Children #33: Let’s Get This Show on the Road

Something is Killing the Children (SIKTC) #33 is a mixed issue that fans will likely be frustrated by. Where last issue took a pause from the major conflict to allow characters to reflect on the gravity of their situation, there is small progress in the story that makes this arc feel like it is overstaying its welcome.

SIKTC #33 is unfortunately the weakest issue of this series so far. Where so many issues prior have given background on the universe or are filled with action, this issue spends most of its time making small efforts towards the anticipated fight between Erica Slaughter and Ms. Cutter.

Written by James Tynion IV, I can say this issue had me frustrated with how little happens over the course of the 30+ pages. As a big fan of the series, it pains me to say I think this arc is overstretched and the disappointment of this issue has me hoping the finale can make up for the several issues of filler that have happened over the Tribulation arc.

The creative team of Wether Dell’Edera and Miquel Muerto do a great job when the duplicitype appears, however, the monster has limited presence and it feels like small steps are making this story arc feel like its overstaying its welcome.

While on the topic of the art, Dell’Edera’s covers have had a very “Americana” style and this cover continues the trend. I especially appreciate the design of the cover as there is a lot (that I suspect) to unpack. I highly recommend anyone picking up this issue to take a moment and appreciate how the cover makes use of the intentional designs.
