Review

Something is Killing the Children #34 is an intense issue that brings the action at the forefront of this arc. It’s violent, terrifying, and a great reminder of what makes this series great, and the art is some of the best of the series so far!

Over the past 14 issues, Ms. Cutter has been an adversary moving along a chessboard as Erica has worked to take on the “duplicitype” monster that is loose in Tribulation, New Mexico. Despite their paths crossing earlier, the two combatants find themselves beginning the face off fans have been eagerly waiting for.

Written by James Tynion IV, this issue is definitely what the Tribulation arc has been needing. I’ve said it before, but this storyline has felt like a western where there are moments of pause and the story points are focused on tension rather than continuous action. However, like all westerns, there comes the crescendo where the hero and villain face off and this issue does just that. Not only is there action in this issue, but the monster makes its presence and the ending had me in shock and frustrated (in a good way) that I have to wait a whole month for the next issue.

The art from Werther Dell’Edera is some of my favorite of the series so far. Part of the story has Erica Slaughter on horseback and there are several panels that had me in awe of the line work and Miquel Muerto’s colors. Aside from a great story, the visuals are definitely something to appreciate.

Final Thoughts

This issue is so fast-paced and because of the quiet moments with beautifully renditioned panels, I highly recommend taking time to appreciate this issue. Fans of the series will be happy to have this issue in their hands.
