Review
Are you desperately missing Spider-verse shenanigans? Did Across the Spider-Verse leave you craving more Miles, Gwen, or even Miguel? Have you been loving all the Spider-multiversal fun? Well, it seems like Alex Segura and Scott Godlewski heard your call. Familiar faces, old faces, and new, perhaps to the movie watcher, faces, present an exciting new adventure for Spideys of all shapes, genders, and sizes. The stories of the Spider-verse continue, and the characters Segura set up in previous issues may just come back.
For those SUPER late to the comics Spider-Verse party, rest easy, there are introductions to be had, and helpful tips where you can go to catch up in case, you’re not sure who someone is. It is perhaps not the best comic for entirely new readers, but a great start to webslinging adventures for those fans of any web crawler.
Have you ever thought? Who would be the best army of villains to take on an army of various Spideys? Well… it’s exactly who think it would be and they’re all terrifying. For every person of a Spider, there exists a version of the Sinister Six. Endless possibilities of marvelous multiversal villainy. But things are not what they seem. Segura does a great job of setting up the mystery and introducing characters, while Godlewski’s art keeps the action going and gets creative with how our main lead sees their situation.
As new, old, and odd characters are faced with, for the first time, the unknown, a hero will triumph, and an overdue hero takes on leadership. Madam Web is in trouble, the web of life is in trouble, but that’s not what the villains are after. What is their true agenda? The spiders you know and love, and maybe some you’ve never heard of jump into a new adventure.
Arana is forced to set out on a mission and face uncertainty with perhaps the most ragtag group of heroes today. Webweaver makes his return, and it is a pleasure to see that beautiful costume in Godlewski’s hands. This is a character with a lot of potential that deserves to be explored.
But the team includes, among the few familiar and questionable characters, a Spider-Cat. Because what’s cooler than a cat? A cat with superpowers of course. Will this feline web-slinger be our salvation? Or will she mistake her webs for yarn? The world will find out. In a world of spiders who wouldn’t want to be a cat?
The characters, new and old are well written and maintain their identity and good characterization, the art is solid, and swift, with good colors, and great use of perspective reminiscent of the Spider-verse films and previous Spider-verse stories, and does well with showing character expressions, even when wearing masks.
The creative team manages to cram a lot of exposition without overloading the audience with information while offering a lot of questions that are sure to get people to return for issue #2.
Final Thoughts
Intriguing with some fan favorite characters on a brand-new team. How will these guys get along? It is unclear. But what is clear is that this is a comic worth checking out.
