Spider-Verse #1: Absolute Carnage

This is a really good first issue. Good, but not great. When I think of “Spider-Verse”. I think of all these awesome versions of my favorite super-hero. This is that, but without the awesome versions.

Writer Jed MacKay weaves (ah-thank you!) a decent story here, but as the saying goes: “You can’t please all of the people all of the time”. This issue starts off strong, with a cool Miles story, but it turns into a showcase of not-that superior Spider-Men pretty quickly. Again, just to point out, I didn’t care for these versions of Spidey that much. You might love them, and if you do, great. But to me, these versions weren’t that great, and when you spend 95% of the issue having Miles interact with them while he’s dragged to meet up with Spider-Zero, it just makes the comic not quite as good as it should have been. Now, this is a very ambitious story, so I’m curious to see where the rest of the story goes, so I’ll pick them up. I just wish this would’ve been a little tighter. It would’ve made the book more enjoyable.

There are different artists on every other page, I’m not even joking here. They range from AWESOME (Art Adams everybody!) to not awesome, It depends what you like. On one page, Miles gets pulled into a Mad Max-like Earth where Spidey is protecting the one vial of non-mutated human DNA, the artist for that totally nails it and gives me something that I never even imagined I could imagine. One the other hand, they spend quite a bit of time in a Manga inspired world, and I’m SO NOT a manga guy, Again, it depends on what you like and what you don’t.
