Review

The end of this chapter of Spider-Verse is here. I honestly wish I could say that I was gonna miss this series, but it’s had its fair share of flubs. It’s not been a total crap show by any means, but I think the problem was a little too many new to us Spider-People. Now I know that the point of these mini-events is to introduce us to new Spider-People, and there’s so many that I’m waiting for. But for every awesome Cowboy Spidey, there’s a terrible, frightening, disturbing Spider-May. Long story short, not quite enough sugar in the lemonade. Author Jed MacKay handled all the basics very well, the story was solid and well thought out, the dialogue was at times funny and spot-on for some characters, and there was enough cameos by Spiders that the audience was familiar with, but not quite enough to save this issue, let alone the whole series. When you’re bombarded with brand-new characters that look awesome, you really need more than one line of dialogue or at least have them show up in more than one panel of the book. This wasn’t quite the ending that I was expecting, hopefully, our next trip into the Spider-Verse is a lot more enjoyable.

Artist Ze Carlos does a heck of a job jamming all the cool looking Spideys that he can into this one final issue. I’ll be honest, I was confused in a couple of places by a couple of very similar-looking Spideys, but for the most part, Carlos really nails the art here. There are some spectacular fight scenes and your gonna want to spend an afternoon looking through the book, looking at each and every character. There’s a few that I had to take more than a couple looks at.

Final Thoughts

Unfortunately, this issue is ultimately disappointing. I hope in future installments, Spider-Verse can be a lot more fun.
