Jessica Drew has been many things in her life time double agent, triple agent, Avenger, mom but right now she's battling the never ending battle: paying the rent.
Spider-Woman takes a seemingly simple gig as a bodyguard and before ya know it, things aren't as simple as they seem.
Spider-Woman is the butter pecan of Marvel Comics, yeah she’s not everyone’s cup of tea but the ones who love Jessica Drew LOVE Jessica Drew. I count myself among their number, so when word broke she would be getting another solo ongoing ya know I had to jump on it. This book is off to a great start plain and simple, it has all the elements of what we love about Spider-Woman. There’s plenty of action, a more grounded view of what life is like for a superhero in the Marvel universe and just enough humor to not water down the vibe.
Karla Pacheco slips in an afterword that basically reinforces what you get from the actual story: she loves Jessica Drew and wants to give her fans something with some meat to it to fully embrace and enjoy. The backup story introduces just why Jessica needed a costume change while also assuring the purist in all Spider-Woman fans that the classic red and yellow isn’t gonna be thrown to the wayside.
When you slap that together with absolutely beautiful art from artists Pere Perez, Paulo Siqueira and colorists Oren Junior and Frank D’Armata, what you get is a visual treat. Every page is gorgeous and properly emotes what is needed. The action sequences are heart pounding, the small moments of comedy are hilarious without cheapening the quality of art or story and all in all even the new suit looks phenomenal despite not being the real O.G.
The cliffhanger ending is the perfect cherry on top to one knockout issue, both cliffhangers for that matter. All in all it’s just a superbly done addition to the beloved legacy of Jessica Drew.
Karla Pacheco and the crew bring their A-game in a wonderful first issue that exemplifies all we love about Spider-Woman and leaves you on an adrenaline high that will have you itching for the next installment.
