Review

It’s creepy mystery time with your friendly, neighborhood, sleep-deprived Spider-Man in a chilling new tale by Saladin Ahmed and Juan Farreyra that is indeed Spine, or Spider-tingling.

Poor Spidey wants to get some sleep, but not only does sleeping sound impossible. There’s that haunting tune that, if you are brave enough, you can listen to. What is colorful and creative in paneling is the stuff nightmares might be made out of. The comic is a work of art, differentiating styles between the waking and dream world, with fantastic color work and unique panel designs to make you feel like you’re in a strange and scary land.

The fact that there is a real song that comes along with what started out as an infinity comic is an amazing and creative way to incorporate different mediums into the story. That way, you are not just reading the lyrics. You can listen to them as well. The fact that it was first made as an infinity comic is reflected in the formatting. But it still feels like a comic book you would pick up in the store. It is a good test to see if infinity comics can be printed. But it likely won’t work for all of the Infinity comics.

The only drawback is that the story would have been a little stronger if the dream world had a little more personal effect on Spider-Man. Why him and not some other hero? Sure, he’s strong. But did he target Peter because he was already sleep-deprived? He can’t be the only sleep-deprived superhero in New York. We see Peter feeling small and appearing as a child, but was that the exhaustion? Or was it the world making him feel small?

But then again, perhaps this comic is equally about Spider-Man and how much he encourages and helps others. If that is the perspective, then the story is about Peter remembering that people love Spider-Man and how he can inspire even the most insecure to fight for themselves and others.

This is, of course, only the beginning, and only those who read it online can tell us what we are in store for.

Will you listen and read the story together? It is a creative and beautiful comic that mostly thought outside the box to give us a unique villain and amazing visuals.

Final Thoughts

Horror fans will get into the spooky spirit with this book, and comic book fans will be sucked in by the art and colors.
