Review

Werewolf by Night relaunches with a new wolf and a mission. Kids are going missing on the Rez and only Jake Gomez, werewolf, can stop them!
This wasn’t a bad issue in the slightest but fans of the original series might be put off a bit by the upbeat tone in what has classically been a horror series. I like the story fine but dislike the way Jake remains in control while the wolf is active. Molly (Jake’s girlfriend) could have used a little more depth a think but maybe i just need to read more to find out more about her.
I liked the inclusion of Red Wolf and the native setting, I am a fan of native superheroes in general (maybe someday they’ll make a Blackfoot one for me haha) and feel it’s an underused and often misused group of people, from a story standpoint. I also reallly liked the way Taboo and B. Earl portrayed some of the casual racism natives run into in 2020– the “sturdier stock” comment got me for sure.
The art by Scot Eaton, Scott Hanna and Miroslav Mrva is truly top notch in this issue. I love the look of the wolf and the American Southwest is portrayed wonderfully. I think the action scenes in particular are well choreographed and dynamic. I particularly like the color work on the night sky; the way the blue fades to purple is gorgeous.
The letters by Joe Sabino are solid. I really appreciate his work on the wolf sounds and the gunfire sound effects.
All in all a good first issue despite the grand departure from the classic tone.
