Star #5: No One Can Hurt Me

The finale of Star’s breakout mini series is here! After settling their differences for the time being, she fought side by side with not just the Scarlet Witch but also Captain Marvel herself. Now in Star #5, she must decide which path is right for her and not just what path others have deemed appropriate.

The conflict from the source of Star’s powers is something that has lasted since her first introduction in the ongoing Captain Marvel series and doesn’t look to let up anytime soon. With the Black Order bearing down on her more than ever before, her hand truly is forced in this issue. The finale of this series does a great job of distilling all of these interpersonal dynamics into a reflective look at Ripley’s own motivations. The result is a determination that I absolutely did not see coming.

The catalyst for this series wasn’t just an Infinity Stone trapped within Ripley. That part of the story grounds the character in the larger Marvel Universe but it also presents unique problems with her individuality and ability to achieve freedom. Which is where the true catalyst lies. The decision of who Ripley will become with this new power is what pulls readers back over and over again, and in Star #5 it seems we got our answer. Star strikes a bargain with the Black Order and in that moment, begins her journey as someone separated from the goodwill of heroes and the twisted efforts of Thanos and his goons. The story’s willingness to hold onto the nuance of the decision until the very last moment serves it very well, allowing the series to end on a truly explosive moment.

The artwork from everyone involved is once again impressive, leaving little to nitpick. It’s a strong finale that packs a punch visually and captures the monumental shift in Ripley’s character remarkably well. The final few pages are among the most memorable of the entire series and will certainly have fans excited. Cowles really excels on letters in this issue, bringing the distinction and clarity that the series needed. With a powerful characterization at work for Ripley, it’s great to see the artwork support all the right aspects of her, even when she makes her dark choice.

For a mini series spinning out of Captain Marvel, Star is honestly better than it ever had to be. I loved the journey we take with Ripley and her choice on who to become sets the stage for a thrilling moment when she pops back up in the Marvel Universe.
