Boldly go… on a new mission with Seven as Captain!
Review
Star Trek #1 follows Seven and her crew five years after the events of Star Trek: Picard. Star Trek has occasionally attempted to address the hegemonic nature and colonizing potential of the Federation (it’s insidious), and this issue promises this series will do the same, all while exploring the crews’ relationships with their own pasts.
As captain of the Enterprise G, Seven is asked to resettle a group of expatriate Romulans escaping the destruction of their home to an unclaimed, unexplored extra-galactic space time corridor the Federation wants to stake a claim in. The series seems to be positioning itself to ask what right the Federation has to relocate people and colonize planets, inhabited or not, and what repercussions a history of “exploring” will have on the people involved. (See the names of the ships in their very own “Wagon Train.”)
Seven, her crew, and their wards all have their own history to face (explore), as well. Jack Crusher and her have both been assimilated, many of the other crew have other trauma to confront, and the Romulans are escaping the destruction of what was their second home, after Romulus was destroyed. Seven is reluctant to stew in her past, but she will likely have to.
Final Thoughts
All in all, this shapes up to be a very promising series. The art is dynamic (Although the coloring occasionally draws darker skin shades as more grey than brown and I would prefer all text to be facing at least within 30 degrees of the normal axis of reading, thank you very much!) and I am excited to see just what type of Captain Seven will be. I look forward to seeing where and when this series will take us, to learning more about the characters, and seeing just what it has to say.
