Review

Being a fan of the TV series I was, of course, looking forward to this mini-series, but I had no idea just how charming it would be. Told from point of view of Grudge, it’s a very funny reinterpretation of some of the events of the Star Trek Discovery TV series. This narration could’ve gone way off the rails, with it slipping too far into Grudge’s “cat brain”, but thanks to the experience and talent of author Mike Johnson, it never even comes close. It’s fun following Grudge all over the Discovery and experiencing all her interactions with the crew that we didn’t get to see onscreen in the show, while at the same time getting inside her head and finding out what she thought of the whole crew, some predictable and some very surprising. What I liked most about this issue is that while some Star Trek books are very similar to “episodes between episodes” this bridges the span of episodes and tell the story from an uncommon “angle”, rather than the normal storytelling method. Johnson really develops a unique voice for this issue.

Wow! Artist Angel Hernandez is playing on a whole new level with this book! The word that best describes the art here is “lush”, Each panel looks like it was carefully and richly painted, with no harsh or loud lines, and while brilliant, all the colors have a muted tone thanks to color artistt JD Mettler. From cover to cover, this book is an artistic treat.

Final Thoughts

Surprisingly warm, charming, and at the same time exciting and interesting, Pretty much like an actual episode of Discovery, just way, WAY different.
