This comic keeps presenting a master exercise in storytelling. From page one, it will get you right into it with the dialogue of beloved characters like Quark or Worf, that combines gracefully with the realist noir art to give you the exact impression of a discarded episode flowing through the pages. It uses this mechanism of pacing, dialogue, Odo’s narration and familiarity of the characters to arrive to explosive moments of tension and beautiful phrases that condense the story, the conflict and its characters, like the moment between Garak and Odo where Garak highlights, in a detective way, how the station has countless secrets.
The on-point characterization, intrigue and how the stakes are up are two of the strong points of this comic, but this same constant rising of stakes and the use of dead of secondary characters for shocking the narrative can desensitize the reader a little. Of course, the writers are aware of the meaning of this rising of stakes, so they give each of the deads as much backstory and intriguing significance as possible, so much navigating a line that still makes it work.
One of the main points of rejoice in reading this book is Greg Scott’s noir art. Every detail, every face (especially the expressions associated with the characters and actors gestures), every scene is as captivating as possible, and it recreates the sets and the feel of the show to the detail, with costumes, scenarios, planes… That finally makes the story go very naturally to an intriguing point through some details that will make longtime fans of DS9 delight, showcasing some Bajoran conflicts of the occupation and with the inclusion of a plot-twisted new character right by the end of the issue.
Final Thoughts
This delightful space noir story will catch you by the delightful dialogues with a loaded meaning behind them, strong characterization and preciously defined art. For fans, it will feel like a secret new episode of DS9 in the innovative tone of the noir comic medium. For newcomers, it will keep catching your attention and building towards a bigger framework to unfold.
