Star Trek Year Five #10: Oh My

Another really good issue of this comic that is turning out to be one of my favorite series. Every month it’s on the top of my pile to read right away.  Writer Jim McCann ends this latest storyline with a dramatic bang. Not a big, explosive ending, but a lower-key “hold on to your emotions” ending. McCann proves that you can change a character in a licensed comic, and he even explains a long time mystery in a different Star Trek series. I can’t wait to see how many people catch it. As per usual, McCann knows these characters so well, you’d think that he created them. While reading the issue, you can actually hear the actors’ voices in your head, and see what some of the scenes might look like. Even though it’s the last chapter, if you’re totally new to this comic, you’ll know what’s going on by reading just the first two pages. Another brilliant script by McCann.

Speaking of brilliant, this art by Silvia Califano is…too good for comics. YEAH, I SAID IT!!! All kidding aside, Califano’s art is truly awesome. Most of the issue takes place on a planet where half the population lives on the ground, and the other half live underwater. I gotta think that drawing alien worlds is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, you can draw anything you want, but on the other hand, you don’t want it to look anything like Earth and I’m assuming that Earth is the only planet that Silvia has been to. But we’ve never hung out, so I’m not sure. Bottom line, she’s a master storyteller. She has conquered the art of sequential storytelling, her grasp of anatomy is amazing. She’s just an awesome, awesome artist and I’m putting $20 down on the table that within a year she’s going to be a very big deal in the comics industry.

Special shoutout to Sebastian Cheng whose colors are the tip-in of this comic. Some of the underwater scenes are pretty breathtaking, and they wouldn’t be if it wasn’t for Cheng. Spectacular.
