Star Wars Adventures The Clone Wars Battle Tales #4: Exiled & Abandoned

This mini-series is four issues deep and honestly, even if you’re not a big Star Wars fan, you’re going to enjoy this book. Even if you haven’t read the previous issues, you’re going to enjoy this book. Heck, you might not be able to read and still enjoy this book (but it’s gonna help). Author Michael Moreci tells us another fantastic couple of stories in this issue. You’ve got the framing sequences that are making up the series-long story, but you’ve also got the “spine” of the book, a self-contained story set during the earlier days of the clone wars. One thing I really haven’t considered is that just how green these soldiers would be in the earliest days of that war. Yes, they have literally been bred for nothing but war, but training and actually doing are two-way different things. This is largely the story of the mental hardships that soldiers deal with during times of war, a very sensitive subject that has sparked many intense conversations when it comes to battle. Sometimes these stories seem like they were written with thoughts of other comic series in mind, but there are a lot of things about this issue that make it really uniquely Star Wars, which I also liked a lot.

With artists like Derek Charm and Davide Tinto, you know by looking at the cover that you’re in for a. treat. What you didn’t know is how much of a treat that it’ll be. Charm illustrated the story that starts and ends the issue, that’s the story that’s been running for four issues while Tinto draws the main story of this issue. Both are drawn really well, and while they both push the boundaries of the CGI style of the cartoon, they never stray too far. I guess if I had to list a disappointment, it would be the scenery. It seems like every world that the Clones fight on has a jungle, and they always end up fighting in it. C’mon, this is COMICS. The only budget is the artist’s imagination! They could fight underwater or in an arctic environment or a swamp, I would just like to see them fight somewhere besides a jungle. It doesn’t hurt anything, but I feel it’s a little limiting when it really doesn’t have to be.
